YAMBU isthe unabashed sound of Latin New York. This distinctive sound is the result of exposing caribbean music (itselfan amalgamation of spanish and african influences) on the larger culture of the "melting pot". Yambu is the continuance of this sound, this sound is Yambu...its orthodox but impressive rhythm section...the speaking skins having conversations of slaps, bangs and thumps...Manny Rivera and Jose Gonzalez burning skin on skin...

One track, "Hippopatamus," is listed as "Brazilian Hustle"; it is the one funky, period instrumental (with wah-wah guitar) disc jockeys might find briefly interesting. Overall it lacks the spark of similar albums by travelling musicians who have paid more of their dues. In its favor, however, it belongs more to the previous era than to the nascent disco scene of 1975. And it has very curious jacket art. In short, it's very good Latin with a touch of funk but not enough soul.
